About Sanitation Department

The City Municipal Corporation has deployed a work force of 1652 Safaiwalas in its regular pay-scales and 112 safaiwalas on daily wages basis for sweeping the roads and lanes and for the collection of street sweepings etc. As per census for the y ear 2001 total population of Chandigarh is 8,06,796 and the length of road is 1489 kms. In addition some areas have been given on contract for its maintenance of sanitary condition and the contractors have deployed 433 safaiwallas. The roads and lanes are swept daily in two shifts. The sweeping work is done on all working days from Monday to Saturday and as per requirement on Sunday and holidays due to the visit of V.I.Ps and V.V.I.P and on the occasion of processions and demonstrations etc.







Garbage Collection Bins


The city corporation has provided garbage collection containers at strategic paints as per details given below where the residents of adjoining areas are required to dispose off their house hold and horticulture waste either individually or collectively by privately organized door to door collection on cost recovery basis.

Setting up of Sehaj Safai Kendras / Khad Bano Kendras


With a view to enforce the segregation of waste and to ensure better management of Municipal Solid Waste in the city. The city corporation in association with Chandigarh Animal Welfare and Economic Development Society has built Sehaj Safi Kendras and Khad Bano Kendras at various places of the city and the resident of those sectors have been asked to dispose their house hold garbage or Horticulture Waste at these designated places only.



Issue of Notices and Challans:


The city Corporation is laying emphasis on persuction and education for adopting civic sense and to help the corporation to maintain sanitary conditions. The corporation is also issuing notices and challans to the defaulters. The challans can be compounded by paying the compounding fee in the office of the Medical Officer of Health. The challans which are not compounded are filed in the court of Chief Judicial Megistrate Chandigarh for disposal as per rules. The detail of the challans made and decided from January to October this year 2002 is given as under:-

Transportation & Disposal of Municipal Solid Waste


The Corporation has deployed 48 drivers and 9 cleaners on the vehicles engaged in the transportation of M.S to Additional Drivers are engaged on contract as and when required. Besides that 4 to 6 Safai walas are deputed on each tractor open truck fand compactor and one Safaiwala in each dumper placers. About 300 tonns of Municipal Solie waste is transported and disposed off at the site of dumping ground situated at the west of Sector 38 near Dadu Majra Labour colony. At present the waste is disposed off through the process of 'Land-filling'. The Corporation is in the process of establishing facilities for the processing of Municipal solid waste by converting it into compost and wormi-compost. The corporation has engaged karnatka compost development Corporation as consultant for the said project. The proposal for setting up a unit for power generation is also in the pipe line.

Dumping ground


There is only one designated dump yeard consisting of 45.11 acreas of land which is situated in Sector 38 near Dadu-Majra Labour Colony. About 300 tonns of Solid Waste is disposed off at the site. It is pushed and compacted in low lying areas and is covered by a thick layer of earth line on day to day basis to present foul smell and fly breeding. There is a proposal to develop floriculture on 5 acres of reclaimed land at the site of dumping ground on experimental basis and a public notice for it has already been issued.



Removal and Disposal of Dead Animals


The corporation of dead animals from Chandigarh and Manimajra to private contractors. At present the dead animals are disposed off at isolated and far off places to minimize the menace of foul smell and health hazards. The Corporation is however in the process of setting up of a car cases utilization centre for which the requisite site has been

Sanitation Complaint Centres


Besides Head Office the complaints regarding road weeping, garbage removal and dead animals are received at the zone Head Quarters and other notified centers. The complaint is attended to on the same day or on the proceeding day if received during off time or at late hours.

Setting Up of Public Toilets


With a view to minimize the menace of open defecation the city corporation has provided Public Toilet and urinals in all most all the sectors. More than one such set has been provided in thickly population Sectors. The mobile toilet Van have been provided in the labour colonies and slums. At present these Toilet sets are being maintained by the Corporation but here is a proposal to transfer the operation and maintenance of these sets to private entrepreneur on contract.-
